This was the largest watercolor I had completed at the time. I wanted to utilize the space and play with perspective to emphasize the size. The figure’s shoes jut out toward the viewer, putting the figure in a position of power over the viewer. She looks down at the viewer while pouring tea and casually sitting on the counter and stove.
This painting is pinup-inspired, but I wanted to subvert the typical objectification of a pinup and to flip the power dynamic between the viewer and the figure. The eye contact and perspective visually empower the figure; she is returning the viewer’s gaze with confidence.
