Queen of pentacles
This painting is a part of my Queer Revolution Tarot series. I painted 78 tarot cards based on the themes of traditional decks, but with a gender expansive approach to a traditionally binary categorization. Masculine and feminine are qualities, not bodies, and anybody could embody either or both.
This card represents self-sufficiency, nurturing energy, and prosperity. The queen of pentacles is a nurturing mother, providing life and abundance. She is financially self-sufficient and has a harmonious relationship with her body. The prosperity she is experiencing brings her joy, and she shares the fruits of her labor with those who lack health, wealth, or self-image, nurturing those around her.
I wanted the pentacle suit to emphasize holistic growth, not wealth. The queen sits on the grass and basks in warmth as the sun sets behind her. She isn’t surrounded by money; instead she holds up a single large coin, looking down at it critically. It isn’t the coin that provides the bounty around her, but the light of the sun.
