I painted this around the time I turned 27. It was a tumultuous time in my life, unstable and confusing as I fell sicker and deeper into my eating disorder. I felt like I was viewing myself from far away, through glass or water, refracting and warping my image of self.

“Yet high over the city our line of yellow windows must have contributed their share of human secrecy to the casual watcher in the darkening streets, and I was him too, looking up and wondering. I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Open doorways and tunnels represent possibility, both good and bad. What could this year hold?
